Frequently Asked Questions
General
What is Spellbinder?
Spellbinder is a Magic: The Gathering deck database and tournament results platform. In public alpha, it helps players explore competitive Magic through published decklists, event results, card data, and metagame tools, with larger personal features planned for later.
Is Spellbinder free to use?
Yes. During public alpha, Spellbinder's public features are free to use, including browsing decks, cards, events, formats, sets, players, and metagame data.
How often is data updated?
Tournament results and card data are updated regularly as new events are processed and new sets are released. If a new event, set, or card does not appear immediately, it may still be in the import pipeline.
Accounts
Do I need an account?
No. Public alpha is focused on public browsing and research tools, so you can use the documentation, deck search, card search, event pages, format pages, sets, and player pages without signing in.
How do I create an account?
Public alpha is centered on public site features, and broader account-based tools are planned for a later phase. New account registration is currently closed while those features are still being developed for a wider release.
Card search
How does the search work?
Spellbinder uses a query syntax inspired by Scryfall. You can search by card name, type, color, mana cost, oracle text, and many other fields. See the full Search Syntax reference for details.
Can I search by multiple criteria?
Yes. Multiple search terms are combined with AND logic by default. For example, t:creature c:red mv<=2 finds red creatures with mana value 2 or less.
Does the app include every Magic card?
Spellbinder includes the vast majority of Magic cards, including digital-only sets and supplemental products. A small number of non-gameplay sets are excluded, such as substitute cards and certain placeholder sets. If you can't find a specific card, it may belong to one of these excluded sets or it may still be in the import pipeline.
Why can't I find a specific card?
Make sure you're spelling the card name correctly. You can also try searching by partial name or using the name: field prefix. If a card was just released, it may take a short time before it appears in the database.
Decks and events
Where does the data come from?
Card data, including Oracle text, images, printings, and set information, comes from Scryfall. Public decklists are sourced from published tournament results, including competitive events, leagues, challenges, and other organized play sources. Current sources include Melee.gg, TopDeck.gg, and Magic Online.
Can I submit my own decklist?
Not in public alpha. Spellbinder currently focuses on published tournament results and public deck data. Personal deck-building and related account tools are planned for future updates.
What is planned after public alpha?
The next major areas of focus are personal tools built on top of the public database, especially deck building, collection management, and match tracking.
What formats are supported?
Spellbinder currently surfaces Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, Premodern, Duel Commander, and Commander across the public app.
Content warnings
Why do some cards have a content warning?
In 2020, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged that certain cards contain racist imagery, harmful stereotypes, or references to sensitive real-world events. These cards were removed from official channels and banned from sanctioned play. Spellbinder displays a content warning on these cards to provide context before showing the image.
Technical
Something isn't working. What should I do?
Try refreshing the page first. If the issue persists, clear your browser cache or try again shortly in case data is still processing. If you still run into problems, reach out through the Contact page or join the Discord community. Feedback during public alpha is especially helpful.
Is there an API?
Spellbinder does not currently offer a public API. The llms.txt endpoint provides a machine-readable index of documentation pages.
